Choosing the right messaging app for your needs isn’t easy, but with so many options out there, WhatsApp remains my number one choice. I mean, there’s a reason it’s the most popular messaging app in the world. Between its ease of use, wide range of features, and secure conversations, WhatsApp stands out as the go-to app for everyday communication. So what makes this app stand out from the competition? Here are a few reasons why I use WhatsApp over other messaging apps. Check out the best messaging apps for Android and iOS available this year.
1. Everyone I talk to uses it.
Even if I don’t think WhatsApp is the best messaging app in the world (which I clearly do), I wouldn’t use it if my friends and family didn’t. The truth is, they all do. My friends, family, acquaintances, and pretty much everyone I meet already uses WhatsApp.
The Meta-owned app is so popular that it’s literally changing the language we use to ask for someone’s number. Instead of asking for a phone number, people are now asking for a WhatsApp number. But it’s not just my family and friends who use it.
WhatsApp has over 2 billion monthly active users. If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard of WhatsApp before, it’s because despite being owned by an American company, it’s Most popular In Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia — basically everywhere.
2. The application is beautiful in appearance.
If I'm going to use an app for hours every week, I want it to be easy on the eyes. WhatsApp has a lively, functional look that appeals to me, unlike other messaging apps.
My favorite feature is WhatsApp's dark mode. Staring at a screen for hours a day is tough. Being able to turn on dark mode gives my eyes a much-needed break.
WhatsApp also gives users the ability to customize chats via the Wallpaper feature. The app gives you a lot of wallpapers to choose from that allow you to customize the visuals for each conversation.
3. WhatsApp Stickers
I also enjoy using WhatsApp stickers. Stickers are customizable and more expressive than just emojis. They can be created from scratch or created with the help of AI with WhatsApp.
If you are a WhatsApp user, you will probably agree that a sticker is worth a thousand words. A sticker is a static or GIF-like image that you can easily insert into conversations.
You can create stickers using AI, but most of us download sticker packs or even create our own.
Stickers are a great way to express your personality or add a little humor to a conversation. Stickers have become so popular that they’ve basically become a second language. My friends and I can have entire conversations using just stickers. Check out the best sticker apps for WhatsApp.
4. Self-destructing messages and one-time media
I’m not a big hoarder. Some people have text conversations that go back years — I don’t. I keep my digital life fairly organized, and WhatsApp’s self-destructing messages feature helps me do that.
WhatsApp allows users to hide conversations every 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. Unless saved, messages will be permanently deleted after a set period of time.
You can also send photos and videos in a way that can only be viewed once, just like Snapchat. Setting the one-time view option for photos and videos is a thoughtful way to not fill up your friend's storage space with personal photos of you.
Privacy is also an added bonus for self-destructing messages. The media is permanently deleted from your phone and the recipient’s device. Even if I’m having a completely harmless conversation, there’s something about saving a conversation that’s been going on for years that keeps me up at night. If these messages fall into the wrong hands, they can always be taken out of context and used against you. Once the message is delivered, there’s no reason for it to hang in the air.
5. Message editing feature
I write words for a living so you can imagine that proper grammar and spelling mistakes are things I like to avoid, no matter the context. So it hurt me more than anything when I sent a message with a misspelled word or bad grammar. I used to correct the mistake in the next message by putting an asterisk followed by the correction.
With the edit feature on WhatsApp, I no longer have to do that. After sending a message, users have 15 minutes to edit the message.
6. WhatsApp Business Features
Many businesses have turned to the paid version, WhatsApp Business, to talk to customers. It’s not just businesses that are happy to use these added features, customers are reaping the benefits as well.
I enjoy not having to open a company’s app, log into their website, or wait hours to talk to them. WhatsApp Business improves communication with automated messaging options. Businesses can automate greetings, remote messages, and create conversation shortcuts that save time for both the company and the customer.
Customers can also collect information about the business, as business accounts act as virtual storefronts that provide customers with information about store hours, prices, important links, and other relevant information.
Although this service is only available in Brazil, India and Singapore, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the service. Payment via WhatsappInstead of logging into the company's website or one of the million payment apps, users in these countries can simply pay via Whatsapp.
7. WhatsApp Channels
WhatsApp is more than just a messaging app. In June 2023, the platform introduced WhatsApp Channels. Businesses and famous individuals can create channels to keep users updated by posting photos, videos, and links.
I use Channels primarily as a news aggregator as it allows me to choose which accounts I want to follow and gives me access to the latest news from within the app itself. All the major news outlets like NYT, BBC, and Axios have accounts, but so do celebrities like Bad Bunny and Olivia Rodrigo. You can also follow your favorite sports teams.
What I love most is that when I open the Channels tab, each article is summarized, so to get the most interesting parts of the article, I don't even have to open the link.
When it comes to messaging apps, WhatsApp is king. If you disagree, that’s great, I’d love to talk more. Just make sure to send me a message on WhatsApp. Its many features and constant innovation are the reason why 2 billion people around the world use it.
